Today, the landscape of process safety management has made a step change after the Workplace Safety and Health (Major Hazard Installations) Regulations 2017 and Workplace Safety and Health (Registration of Factories) (Amendment) Regulations 2017 were gazetted on 2 May 2017.
The chemical process industry is one of the key contributors to Singapore’s manufacturing outputs. Many of these facilities are classified as Major Hazard Installations (MHIs) as they are dealing with large volumes of highly hazardous / flammable substances in their manufacturing processes.
Against the backdrop of MHIs regulations, the mission of SLP is to advance loss prevention by sharing knowledge, experience and lessons learned, through training, networking and collaboration. The year ahead will be full of opportunities, and no doubt there will be issues that we will have to manage through.
Partnering with local institutions to expand our process safety capabilities is an important piece of our ability to engage process safety and workplace safety & health practitioners to participate in SLP training courses, workshops and events. On behalf of the Executive Committee of SLP, I would like to announce that Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) and SLP are going to jointly sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on 29 June 2017.
Both organizations agree to collaborate in the following areas:
a) Promote a series of programmes (annual symposium, short courses, workshops, masterclasses etc.) aimed at building a core pool of skilled professionals with the knowledge, skills and capabilities in Process Safety;
b) Create upskilling opportunities for professionals from all process and related industries.
Beyond signing the MOU between SIT and SLP, the Executive Committee of SLP does also agree to sign a tri-party MOU between the Employment and Employability Institute (e2i), SIT and SLP on 28 July 2017, during the 2017 Major Hazards Symposium.
Finally, SLP must continue to serve the process industry. We cannot underestimate the power and impact of what is happening around us today. We do need to be nimble and ready to move fast.
Thank you very much and looking forward to your continual support!
Teng Chong Seng
SLP President: 2016-2018
