ObjectiveThis course aims to develop engineers and engineering practitioners in their competencies with regard to hazardous area classification and the impact on process areas from flammable fluids. The professionals will be able to interpret and produce hazardous area classification documentation. They can assess the suitability of equipment located in explosive atmospheres.
SynopsisPrinciples in fire and explosion towards safety and protection are introduced. It provides the application and interpretation of hazardous area classification based on different codes and standards. Hazardous area classification concepts, methodology and technique are presented together with process equipment hazardous area radii. Ventilation in open and enclosed areas and their effectiveness are addressed. Product certification and equipment markings are addressed. Fire and explosion incidents and preventive measures are reviewed.

0945-1030Application & interpretation of the relevant codes and standards: API, ATEX, BS, EI, FM, IEC, IECEx, ISO, NEC, NFPA, SS, UL. Division / Zone hazardous area classification.
1030-1045Tea Break
1045-1115Hazardous area classification concepts, methodology and technique. Class and category of petroleum and flammable fluids. Flash point, ignition source & temperature, minimum ignition energy, LEL, UEL. Source, grade and buoyancy of release.
1115-1200Determine process equipment / accessories hazardous areas: compressors, launchers, receivers, piping, PRVs, pumps, separators, sumps, tanks, vents.
1200-1300Lunch
1300-1340Importance and effect of ventilation on hazardous area classification. Natural or artificial mechanical ventilation, ventilation flowrates. Positive or negative pressure, and design target for flammable atmosphere in enclosed area, battery room, laboratory. Fire & Gas detection system.
1340-1430Produce hazardous area classification schedule and drawings for the open and enclosed areas in a plant.
1430-1445Tea Break
1445-1545Product certification and Directive / Standards markings for protection of electrical equipment and mechanical protection concepts in explosive / flammable atmospheres. Gas group, temperature class.
1545-1630Discussion and review of flammable fluids fire and explosion incidents, and preventive measures.
